The State I’m In

It’s been two months since I posted about my plans for the New Year…which kinda blows my mind. It’s nearly spring. SPRING! I have an hour before I start readying myself for Cailin O’Neil’s weekend visit, so I thought I’d provide a quick update on what I’ve been doing. Because I know you’re dying to hear more about me.

March is my big month. In my latest article on Matador Life, I’ve already sentenced myself to a deadline. Have a read, and laugh at my expense. It amazes me that some people still think I haven’t been working these past few months, and while I haven’t gotten paid for it all, I’ve been steadily and slowly building a reputation and presence. I’m like the tortoise. A sexy tortoise.

I’ve been writing a few guest posts, like these:

sexy tortoise

Sexy tortoise. Or turtle.

Her Packing List – The One Little Thing (Motion Sickness and Relaxation Pills): A not-so-serious ode to Gravol.

HostelWorld – 10 Fun Budget Things to Do in Halifax: I miss Halifax.

I’m AOL Canada’s official Newfoundland blogger. This week I wrote about 10 days of St. Paddy’s Day partying in St. John’s (god help me). Other favourites include a profile of the Newfoundland Chocolate Company and my current obsession about doing the Trans-Labrador Highway. Anyone?

I’m also one of CheapO Air’s Canadian bloggers, the other being my partner in crime, Cailin. The blog was just recently launched, so I’m pretty pumped to share a little Canadian love. East coast, represent.

Finally, I’m throwing down news pieces on the NileGuide blog, mostly weird tales that I find irresistible. Like stranded grand pianos, and global hangover cures.

On the side, I’ve been bartending at the LSPU Hall. I can’t think of a better casual place for me to work.

Is this not the most self-gratuitous post you’ve ever read?

I’m still working on Social Media Atlantic Canada. It’s a slow process, but I’m getting some amazing help along the way from people I will owe my life someday. Chris Guillebeau helped me face some fears, Andy Hayes gave me incredible business advice, and Doug Anweiler of Authentic Sea Coast is like a networking genius. My Matador Network colleagues are the best group of people to work with ever, and Leigh Shulman has gently coaxed me away from the ledge on more than one occasion.

Not to mention the people who have emailed me with support and love, like Sabina Lohr, Jodi Ettenberg, and Ayngelina Brogan. And the others who have commented on blog posts, asked me for guest posts, or gave me general shout-outs in their writing. And my friends I see on a weekly basis. And my family for not judging me for this blog. Thank-you.

Alright, I’m gonna go get drunk now.

    • March 13 2011

Josh, you are quite good for my ego! Think I’ll keep you around. ;) Thanks!

  • March 12 2011

Go Candice! Ya busy bee! Good work on scoring those extra writing gigs. Your name came up in a random drunken conversation a couple weeks back about cool travel writers in the area. Turns out you’re one of them! lol keep up the good work!

    • March 13 2011

      Really?! Hahaha, LOVE it. Thanks!

  • March 12 2011

Look at you all rockin’ the writing world but then you knew you cuold all along.

  • March 12 2011

Thanks for the shout out Candice but it is easy to support someone as awesome as you. This is a rocky point that you will look back at and realize it made you a stronger person.

    • March 13 2011

I appreciate it, Ayngelina! Thanks! Didn’t realize you were going to TBEX this year too. Hope I see you there.

A cleanse, ehhhh? I could probably use one of those…feel free to email me.

  • March 13 2011

I always knew you were working. The AOL Canda thing sounds pretty impressive. And I’m really rooting for your Social Media Atlantic Canada to succeed. You’ve got such a great grasp of the whole scene, I think you’ll see success with it.

    • March 16 2011

Thanks, Sabina! Here’s hoping. :) I love this part of the world and it is in DIRE need of social media love!

  • March 13 2011

It sounds like you have some awesome things going on, the Social Media Atlantic Canada sounds really interesting. You’ve inspried a lot of interest in Newfoundland, a destination that wasn’t always on peoples minds before. I mean a lot times Canada is mentioned and travels sites only focus on Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal (not that there’s anything wrong with those cities). Really you should talk to the tourism board in Newfoundland, tell them you want commisison or something.

    • March 16 2011

Thanks, Alouise! I’ve been working on it, but NL Tourism is pretty closed off since it’s a government department and all. They don’t seem very interested in anything I’m doing, but we’ll see. Other people, on the other hand, are very supportive!

  • March 14 2011

Aww, Candice. Thanks for the shout out. Everyone should take some time to write posts just expressing gratitude like this.

I know it seems overwhelming, but new things always do. And you’re going to get where you want to go. I’m sure of it.

    • March 16 2011

I agree, Leigh! It’s important to let others know their support and work is appreciated.

  • March 14 2011

Staying busy is the way to go and yeah its almost spring just seemed like yesterday I was bringing the new year in and its already almost April, time is just flying by. Nice photo of the turtle or tortise.

    • March 16 2011

I agree, CRAZY! Thought spring was here already until the snowstorm on Monday, haha. D’oh.

  • March 14 2011

Thanks for the shout out, Candice. When do we get the genius badge for our website :)

I’m so happy you are doing so well Candice! I knew that it would all just be a blessing in disguise and you have really taken it by the balls and made it your bitch!

    Keep it up lady!

Hehe, thank you kindly, Annie! I still have so much to do, but it’s a start, I think.
