Doing the Maritimes: A Month of Firsts

I just got back from a whirlwind three-day roadtrip with Ms. Cailin O’Neil. She’s been carting my unexercised ass all over the place, putting up with my overdramatic screams on the Confederation Bridge and my insane laughter when finding roadside oddities, like giant blueberry monuments and a museum entirely dedicated to Anne Murray. So tonight after dropping me off at Jo’s, I sat on the couch kinda lost for a few minutes with a laptop opened in front of me.

Then I texted her, “I misses you.”

She replied, “You left your sneakers in my car.”

Anyway, we went to Guysborough to be guests of Doug at the Des Barres Manor Inn on the Authentic Sea Coast, and then decided to jaunt over to Prince Edward Island. More detailed posts about those later, the whole thing was spontaneous and wonderful.

It’s been a month of firsts, my friends. Big firsts and little firsts. Or are all firsts big firsts? I’m not sure, it’s the first time I’ve questioned it.

Word.

Word.

Here’s to giving the world a giant middle finger and living for once.

1. First ever roadtrip.
2. First time tidal bore rafting trip.
3. First time riding a roller coaster (yes, it was wooden, and lasted for 30 seconds, but it’s a start).
4. First time ever enjoying myself at a theme park.
5. First time visiting New Brunswick.
6. First time visiting Prince Edward Island.
7. First time visiting Cape Breton Island.
8. First time plotting a real business and hatching plans (shhh).
9. First time driving a golf cart.
10. First time driving across the monstrosity of an architectural feat known as the Confederation Bridge.
11. First time eating clam strips. I asked the waitress, “What are clam strips?” She stared at me and said, “Strips of clam.”
12. First time in Peggy’s Cove and Lunenburg.

Oh yes, I’m conquering my fears, no matter how trivial. Except for the spider thing, that can wait.

Got this bad boy after riding the coaster. Too bad its fake.

Got this bad boy after riding the ‘coaster. Too bad it’s fake.

How ready am I to be my own boss and work location independently? So ready, oh yes.

Don’t forget to vote for me in the Get Rid of Me contest of a lifetime! You can vote more than once per day. Good karma!

and to think, before you left you where whining that you didn’t want to leave St John’s and you weren’t ready to go… ;D

So glad you’re having all these adventures! Got a few things on that list I haven’t done yet… and considering how work has been lately, kind of wishing I’d just up and quit and joined you ;) And I love that you included crossing the link in your list! it is a pretty big deal of a bridge I guess ;D

    • September 20 2010

AHHH, so true! So many firsts! My god.

  • September 17 2010

Sounds like you’ve been having an awesome time… road trips are always so much fun. Life is about celebrating, so big firsts or little I don’t think that distinction matters too much.

  • September 17 2010

We’re honoured to be on your list of “firsts”! Thank you again for visiting us on Nova Scotia’s Authentic Seacoast.

    • September 20 2010

Thanks for having me! I`ll be doing a post about my stay there soon. :)

  • September 17 2010

Good for you for getting so many firsts under your belt in such a short time! Travel is the way to do it. And Candice, that golf cart photo is just too cool.

    • September 20 2010

Hahahaha, thanks! I think I look pretty rad myself.

  • September 17 2010

-I see your freckles on your elbow. Sexy.

    -Nice post

    • September 20 2010

Hahahahaha, I am a hot mess. Glad you enjoy the freckles, I like to think of them as beauty marks.

  • September 18 2010

First time on a roller coaster? First time enjoying a theme park?? You sure make it tough for us theme park marketing folks. :P

Well, to be fair, I never read any underwater equipment technical manuals, so I guess we’re even.

    • September 20 2010

Oh dude, no theme parks in this neighborhood could compare to the ones you`ve worked for, hahaha. Send me somewhere swanky!

  • September 18 2010

Go Candice! Glad to see you’re livin’ it up! Look me up if you’re ever back in Halifax!

  • September 19 2010

Hm. You tried leaving your sweater and a book in the rental car when I dropped you off too. Is this your way of making sure you see people again?

Just kidding! Great to see the excitement.

    • September 20 2010

Hahahaha, wow, it does seem to be a running theme with me, doesn`t it.

  • September 19 2010

Eeveryday should have a first in it.

  • September 19 2010

candice! i think you’re winning in the candice vs the world competition. there’s no time for fear!

    • September 20 2010

Hahaha, thanks Adam! Still got a long ways to go.

  • September 20 2010

So glad you’re having such a good time after all the stuff you’ve been through. There’s so much more to see in NS you must stay!

    • September 20 2010

I think I just might have to stay a little longer. ;)

  • September 20 2010

Haha, it sounds like you guys had a good time and knocked out a whole lot of firsts! So funny about roller coasters–the city I grew up in had a massive theme park that I sometimes went to, and LOVED roller coasters. The crazier and scarier the better. Now that I’m an adult, the thought of riding those same rides makes me nauseous. Funny how that works :) So glad you had a blast! BTW, I’m dying to get my butt up to Nova Scotia. Never been!

    • September 20 2010

Oh dude, I am SO not a theme park person. Hahahaha, I was rather impressed with myself. Come visit!

  • September 20 2010

Wooden rollercoasters are the scariest! I have to seriously have a pep talk with myself before I go on one.. and I love them!

    Good for you lady!

    • September 20 2010

Hahaha, trust me, that`ll probably be my last ride!

  • September 21 2010

Guysborough? There’s really a place named Guysborough? I think I want to live there just for the name, but it would be cool, of course, if it was really full of (hopefully totally hot) guys!

Congratulations on so many firsts! And for the record I think you should make that tattoo permanent. I love it!

    • September 23 2010

Alas, not filled with hot guys! How sad. I like the tattoo as well, even if the sword is crooked. But that’s what she said.

  • September 25 2010

Love the list of firsts, Candice! It sounds like you’re having an awesome spell of travel.

    • September 27 2010

      Thanks, Anne! I am indeed.

  • September 26 2010

How did you enjoy New Brunswick? I think my home province is often overlooked. But that’s clearly a biased opinion = )

    • September 27 2010

I only drove through it to get to the bridge, unfortunately. :( But I definitely need a trip there, especially Moncton!
