I climbed aboard a teeny-tiny plane today with some lovely reps from Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism to spend the next couple of days in Gros Morne. We’re all here for the Writers at Woody Point festival, a collaboration of authors and musicians and now bloggers. Ah, the evolution of writing. Look at me, I’m a professional!

I had the most interesting conversation with a very kind cab driver who poured out his life story to me, checked into The Tide’s Inn (oh god, I love that name), drank enough coffee to fuel an elephant at the Cat Stop Cafe, and soon I’ll be off for supper and live music.

Life as a travel writer. It ain’t bad.

I’m staying in Norris Point, while the festival takes place at Woody Point (in case the festival title wasn’t clear), which are both located inside Gros Morne National Park. There’s something about this place that makes me feel the same way I did when I was in the Rockies: inspired, peaceful, and happy. People talk to me like they already know me; they don’t even bat an eyelash about me being an “outsider.” Earlier, I had the most riveting conversation with the front desk worker at my hotel about the gorgeous man next door. Maybe I’m just a small town girl, living in a lonely world.

I need a beer.

Over the next few days I’ll be kayaking, hiking the Tablelands, eating, meeting cool folks, and attending readings by fantastic writers including Wayne Johnston. Did I mention he’s my favourite author in the whole wide world? He is. I can’t wait to stare at him until he agrees to sign my boobs books. Emma Donoghue is also in attendance, and if you haven’t already, get your hands on a copy of Room.

AND tonight I’m seeing Hey Rosetta! in concert, as well as Matthew Hornell and the Diamond Minds. Hey Rosetta! is one of my all-time favourite bands, and if you want to hear some kick-ass east coast music, start with my absolute favourite:
