How to deal with a storm in St. John’s

  • February 03 2012

Yeah, dude. Winter in big cities… I physically couldn’t handle it in Berlin, there’s just nothing pretty about dirty grey slobber on sidewalks.
As much as you have to extra prepare in smaller places and in rural areas, you can’t say it ain’t pretty there.

UGH I know. Winter was always so enjoyable to me, now it’s just a freaking hassle all the time. I fear for my life here. I live on a super steep hill and cars just careen down it like nothin’.

That last pic is beautiful! I feel for you. I could never handle that. If you need a warm vacay, come on down! =)

Oh man, I’m gonna take you up on that offer! Hahaha.

I have always been a fan of winter. I just like snow. And skating.
Having a car kind of sucked some of the love of winter of away from me. . . but it’s balanced by having a dog. If I get tired of shovelling snow, or have had 5 heart attacks on my drive home, I just go out in the yard with him and throw some snow balls. I can’t even put into words how ridiculously excited Ollie gets when he plays in snow, and what kind of happiness it brings me…
    I’m so lame.

But, anyhow, I think 90% of the conversations I have with my neighbours is about the weather. And if I can leave my house tomorrow night, there will be a gathering involving a lot of wine to ride out the tail end of the storm. If I can’t leave my house tomorrow night, there will be a gathering in my living room involving me and 3 bottles of wine. Huzzah!
(or, bringing said wine across the street and making you watch anne of green gables with me. . . unless i literally cannot open my door, i can always make it across the street ;) )

I miss winter around the bay! And snowmobiling. And goddamn, I wish I could afford some skates.

Bottle shots and The Wire. It looks like your well prepared for any winter storm.

Winter in Edmonton (aside from one week of -30C) has been pretty mild. We’re pretty lucky so far, but I’m sure we’ll get some freak winter storms in June to make up for it.

    • February 09 2012

Heck yeah! Hahaha, last month we had “Junuary.” Sums up the weather.

  • February 05 2012

I’m thinking that’s not enough beer.

    I hear that, Candice!
Hmm… insulated yoga pants (seems like an unexploited market)?!
    :)

It sounds, based on your description of the weather, that you live here in Clevleand. LOL.

Whenever I hear “Cleveland,” I automatically think “Drew Carey.”

I may be a week late responding to your post – because I was somewhere warm and trying to avoid the computer as much as possible.
This made me smile – and I hope some fabulous PR person saw it and you are heading to tropical climes soon.

And fwiw, it might have worked. :)

After spending a few weeks recently in Canada I realized how tough all you Canadians are during the winters there! I heard it has been a non-winter though generally this year, so maybe a storm or two is due. I think i was most impressed or scared by the girl I saw walking through snow drifts in flip flops and shorts.

    • February 15 2012

Hahaha, yup! I wish I appreciated winter more. If I had the right gear, perhaps I would.

I love your writing and winter has been weird in Ontario. Mild. Like, one day? SNOW STORM. Next day? Spring time. No bigs. Whatevs. BUT IT IS. Because I keep confusing what clothes to put on and either sweat, or freeze = sickness is coming.
